What is Pay-Per-Click Advertising or Google Adwords?

Google Adwords is a Pay-Per-Click (PPC) service. It is defined as the guaranteed placement of a small "ad" on the search results page for a specific keyword or keywords in return for a specified payment per click, and ONLY when a visitor clicks on that ad.

No cost is applied to the advertiser to appear on the results page, this is known as a 'page impression'. A 'page impression' is when your advertisement appears on the results page, but is not 'clicked' on.

You only pay the amount you have agreed to (or bid for) when someone actually clicks on your ad and is taken to your website; therefore, the term "pay per click".

For example, if you choose to pay $.20 for the keyword "party planner" while others pay only $.10, your site would rank first. If, on the other hand, you pay $.20 and your competitors are paying $.50, you would rank lower.

A PPC listing on a search engine results page typically consists of a title, which usually is your website's name or perhaps a short heading (around 50 characters maximum) and also a short (usually no more than 200 characters long) description of your service or some promotional wording. (see example below)

Example: Pay Per Click On Google

There can be some fierce competition for specific keyword(s).

The business that bids the highest amount of money for a specific keyword will be ranked first in the PPC results, the second-highest bidder will be ranked second, etc. (these results appear on the right hand side as shown in the sample above).

Typically, Google Or other search engines will limit the number of PPC ads on a results page to less than 10, and research has shown that unless you are in the first 3 or 4 of the pay per click ads, you are much less likely to be clicked on by visitors.

Because the competition is so fierce in this market right now, Google and other search engines do not require a minimum amount of money to be invested in a campaign. This is great news for small businesses who want to trial the effects of pay per click advertising. After your intitial set up cost, you can spend as little as $20 or however much you decide to budget.

One of the main benefits of pay-per-click advertising is instant traffic (or visitors) to your website!

Achieving high rankings in the organic search (main results on the left hand side of the search page) can take a long time, but with pay-per-click advertising people are able to find you immediately after your pay per click advertising campaign has begun.
